ABOUT IRWIN BERMAN

TRANSFORMING NATURE ONTO FABRIC

Manipulating reality through manipulating photographs has been at the core of my art for most of my adulthood. Never a slave to Photoshop, I initially embraced Polaroid’s SX70 camera, whose photographs could be manipulated by hand. Exhibits in this period included one-man shows in New York and New Orleans. More recently, I created radiographic transparencies (X-RAYS) of photographs that I had manipulated using semi-viscous barium. These were exhibited in Palm Beach and Jupiter, Florida and later in Brunswick, Georgia. The latter exhibition included, “Wrath of Poseidon” 11 feet wide by 7 feet high, illuminated from behind by a giant custom “light box”.

Several years ago, noting that collectors were ambivalent toward light box presentations, I discovered that printing on highly reflective aluminum can afford all the impact of the X-RAY transparencies. Taking the process a step further, I began printing some of these images on fabric (cotton, silk, linen) for home décor and wearable’s. Bosha.b is the outgrowth of these fabrics, which I have printed specifically for women’s wear collection, created by Bosha Stone. Other examples of my images may be seen on:
